Building a news aggregator into your website

I was fiddling around with RSS and various newsreaders and aggregators. I liked the idea of writing my own aggregator and integrating it with my website. For one, I could now be down in Ethiopia and not worry about the hassles of dialing-out with a laptop and struggling with Syndirella. So here goes my crude but “rough and ready” news aggregator in Domino. You can see a working implementation on my website at: http://www.unganisha.org/home/feeds
Some features:
- Works on Domino 5
- Works using the standard XML libraries in R5
- Works with rss .91 and 1.0, (don’t know about rss 2.0)
- Expiry for the news can be changed
Requirements:
- At least Domino 5.05 (that’s the version I tested it on)
- Unrestricted Agent Access (for the rss files to be downloaded automatically from remote sites)
- Sun’s brazil framework,included as a script library in the download. ( I use only the httpRequest class in the framework, I’ve never felt very happy with the stability of the java.net.URLconnection classes).

Setting up the aggregator is pretty straightforward. You need to sign the database with an agent signer id and enable the agents, using designer (You can change the execution schedule of the agents if you like).
Once you have the database set-up on your server, take a look at some of the
sample feeds and news subscription list by entering the following in your browser:
http://server-name/crudeagg.nsf/feeds

by Aden on Wednesday, August 23rd at 11:36 AMI would like to post a comment regarding your Domino News Aggregator, If there are any users who have downloaded and was running the code successfully on a pre Domino 7.0 server, but now have errors running it. The problem most likley lies with the fact that Lotus have removed the jar file (XML4J.jar) from C:\lotus\notes\data\domino\java, there fore when you run the code it will not work. To make it work obtain a copy of the Jar file from a pre 7.0 server and add it to the Edit Project, Agents files area of the ConvertRssFeedToViewFormat agent. It should then work as before.
